The Open, where it all started.
The Open began to take shape on 17th October 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club when 8 professionals played the first ever Open Championship, playing 3 rounds in a single day, for a total of 36 holes as Prestwick Golf Club had only 12 holes.
The winner was awarded the Challenge Belt, a belt with silver detailing that he would enjoy until the next year, when the next The Open would be held. The first winner was Willie Parker Sr.
Tom Morris Jr won The Open in 1870 for the third time in a row, and permanently kept the Challenge Belt. As there was no prize for the winner, the 1871 edition was not played, returning to action in 1872, with a new trophy: the mythical Claret Jug.
The Open as we know it began in 1892, with 4 rounds being played, and in 1898 a cut after 2 rounds of play was established for the first time, leaving half the field for the weekend. The Open has only missed its annual date on 13 occasions, due to the lack of a trophy (1871), World War I (1915-1919), World War II (1940-1945) and most recently Covid-19 (2020).

Venue history The Open
Of the 3 initial courses where the British Open started and all of them being in Scotland, only the Old Course of St Andrews remains in the rotation, however Prestwick Golf Club and Musselburgh Golf Club have become obsolete for such a big event and with so many crowds. Two other courses in England have also dropped out of the rotation such as Royal Cinque Ports and Prince’s.
Old Course St. Andrews 2022
The Open 2022 will bring the world of golf to a standstill, a key date as it is the 150th anniversary of the competition which will take place on the most famous course in the history of golf; the Old Course at St Andrews. Considered the oldest course in the world and referred to as the ‘home’ of the sport, walking its fairways and greens will be a walk through history watching the best players in the world in an unrivalled setting.
Old Course at St. Andrews is known by all as the Cradle of Golf. It is the oldest course in the world, of which there is no exact record of its birth, although it is believed to be more than 600 years ago. Little can be said about its designer since Daw Anderson (around 1850), Old Tom Morris (between 1860 and 1900) and Dr. Alistair McKenzie (around 1930) carried out the renovations.
