Undoubtedly, the Solheim Cup 2023 is the most important golf event held in Spain since the 1997 Ryder Cup, where Severiano Ballesteros promoted that for the first time in the history of the competition it would be played outside the British Isles, at the Real Club Valderrama.

Solheim Cup 2023 Venue
The Solheim Cup 2023 will be played at Finca Cortesin, a golf course located in the town of Casares in the province of Malaga.
Finca Cortesin is once again the epicentre of world golf after the three previous editions of the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

Solheim Cup History
The Solheim Cup is the most important women’s golf competition in the world, known as the women’s version of the Ryder Cup. The initiative for this competition came from Karsten Solheim, founder of the PING brand, a manufacturer of golf equipment.
The Solheim Cup is a biennial tournament that pits women’s professional golf teams from Europe and the USA against each other, with 12 players per team playing against each other in a match play format.
The history of the Solheim Cup begins in 1990, the first edition of the tournament was held at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club (Florida, USA), where the American team won by a hefty score of 11 1/2 to 4 1/2 of the European team.
Until 2002 it was played in even-numbered years, alternating with the Ryder Cup. But after the 2001 Ryder Cup calendar was changed following the September 11 attacks in the USA, the Solheim Cup was moved to odd-numbered years from 2003. A further reorganisation of team golf events took place in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Solheim Cup will return to even-numbered years from 2024.
The Solheim Cup alternates between the United States and Europe for each edition, in Europe it has so far been held in Scotland, Wales, Sweden, Ireland and Germany.
Solheim Cup Winners
The Solheim Cup winners’ record is in favour of the North American team with 10 victories to the European team’s 7, in the sixteen editions that have been played to date. The Americans have turned their home into a fortress where they have only won once.
The record of the competition may seem unbalanced, but in the recent history of the Solheim Cup the European team has taken the lead and become the team to beat. With four wins in the last six editions, including a memorable and thrilling triumph at the 2019 Solheim Cup in Gleneagles.
