A bit of history…
Volvo Masters, Ryder Cup, American Express Championship, Open de España, Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters, are some of the tournaments that Real Club Valderrama has hosted throughout its more than 40 years of history. Valderrama is, without doubt, one of the legendary venues of European golf. It is considered to be the best course in Continental Europe and the best players in history have passed through this spectacular estate of cork oak groves and nurtured its history with joy, drama, glory and tension.
The debut of Tiger Woods
The 1997 Ryder Cup marked a before and after on the Cadiz course. It was Tiger Woods‘ first Ryder, and the only one where Seve Ballesteros was captain. The best players in the world returned to Sotogrande two years later for the American Express World Championship. Tiger then arrived at the legendary 17th hole with a two-shot lead and the tremendous backspin effect on his approach meant that his ball passed very close to the hole and continued to fall to the water hazard under the incredulous gaze of the best player in history.
A triple bogey gave the lead to Miguel Ángel Jiménez playing the 18th hole. However, the Malaga native made a bogey on the last hole that condemned him to the playoff with Tiger Woods. Tiger took the final victory.
Jiménez has also been one of the few players able to achieve an albatross (two shots on a par five) on the 17th hole. Also Greame McDowell and more recently Haydin Porteous. Do you want to be the next one to try it?
Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters
In recent seasons the tournament has been renamed the Estrella Damm NA Andalucía Masters and features the best Spanish players. Sergio García is undoubtedly one of the most inspired players at Valderrama. He has won three times and the 2017 Masters champion considers the Cadiz course to be the ‘Augusta National of Europe’. Other illustrious names such as Jon Rahm, Adri Arnaus, Adrián Otaegui, Jorge Campillo and the leading names in Spanish golf will also be present along with some of the international stars.
